In the early morning hours of August 6, 1887 in rural Bibb County, Georgia, Captain Richard F. Woolfolk and eight members of his family died at the hands of an axe murderer. A single member of the household survived the attack. Tom woolfolk, the Captain's eldest son escaped the slaughter and sounded the alarm, only to be arrested for the crime. On October 29, 1890, after languishing in jell, chained to the wall of his cell for three years, enduring countless trials, he calmly climbed the steps to the gallows, proclaimed his innocence one last time and forgave those who were about to kill him.
After extensive research, and in vivid detail, author Carolyn DeLoach has been able to capture the emotions of the period. Shadow Chasers is a factual account of one of the most horrendous crimes in the history of the state of Georgia, as told by the actual participants, in their own words. Ms. DeLoach guides the reader through the tangled web of tragic events and subtly presents haunting evidence that a serial mass murderer was protected by the political forces of the State, and an innocent man was sacrificed. This man was clearly railroaded by a corrupt system that is still corrupted today! I am not an attorney but I can see several instances where some trial participants should not have been involved! In the end, a sad tragedy of lives wasted and destroyed.
The first thirteen chapters were gone, it started at chapter 14
This story had me rooting for Tom all along. How sad to see how it ended. The author did a great deal of research and still made to story feel personal. Nice job!
Great read.If you like historical accurate stories, this is a must read. Excellent research to flesh out the characters. Especially interesting since I recently saw Lizzy Borden movie. Perhaps there was another explanation? I also feel that Georgia folks who study their genealogy read this as they may find an ancestor or two.
Shadow Chasers is a great documentary of an American tragedy. Thank you Carolyn DeLoach for all your research and dedication in completing the novel. It was great to see history and a murder corrected. Ms. DeLoach's novels grab your attention right away.
The story was well written and made the reader want to keep reading.... it was a page turner but the story was very dark and because it was true it was hard to hear that justice was not done and easy to see how things can fall through the crack concerning our laws.... this will make you question how fair and honest people really are and how it affects our judicial system
This book is better than Deloach’s first one. It is better organized and has a few new tidbits. The book itself had part of a page torn out but otherwise was a great experience.
